Frequently Asked Questions

Collectors MD is a support-based community for anyone struggling with compulsive collecting, overspending, or gambling-like behaviors in the hobby. Whether you’re into sports cards, TCG, memorabilia, sneakers, watches, NFTs, or any other collectibles, this FAQ answers common questions about who we are, what we offer, how to join, and how you can get involved. We’re here to help you collect with intention, not compulsion.

What is Collectors MD and who is it for?

Collectors MD is a community-driven platform focused on responsible collecting, mental wellness, and hobby reform. We support anyone struggling with compulsive behaviors tied to collecting—whether it’s sports cards, TCG, memorabilia, sneakers, watches, NFTs, or any other collectibles. If you’ve ever felt stuck in a cycle of chasing, spending, or regret, you belong here.

We’re not a licensed therapy provider, but we do offer both peer-led support groups, and a 12-step recovery program specifically designed for individuals struggling with compulsive collecting, overspending, and gambling-like behaviors within the hobby. We also provide educational content, tools and resources—including our Collectors MD Recovery Guide—and honest conversations from people with lived experience. Additionally, we’ve built a fully developed referral network that connects collectors and their families with a wide range of support options, including licensed therapists, gambling treatment providers, intensive outpatient programs, recovery communities, financial counseling resources, blocking and self-exclusion tools, and other organizations that specialize in behavioral addictions and mental health. Our goal is to meet people wherever they are in their journey and help them find the level of support that makes the most sense for their individual needs.

Not at all. We’re not anti-hobby—we love collecting. Our mission is to help people reconnect with the joy of collecting by shifting from compulsion to intention. It’s about setting healthy boundaries, finding balance, and making decisions that reflect your values—not your impulses. You don’t need to quit collecting—you just need to be open to change.

We’re not anti-gambling—we’re anti-exploitation. We push back on manipulative, predatory tactics used by some platforms and sellers, especially when they target vulnerable consumers. We advocate for ethical marketing, greater transparency, and protective measures across the hobby.

“MD” represents our three pillars: Mental DetoxMoney Discipline, and Meaningful Decisions. These guide how we help collectors pause, reflect, and build healthier habits—without shame or rigid rules. It’s a framework for clarity and control in a high-pressure space.

Our peer support meetings are free, held every Wednesday from 8-9PM ET via Google Meet. We also host Unboxed, a second weekly support meeting held every Thursday from 7:00-8:00 PM ET in partnership with PGCC (Problem Gambling Coalition of Colorado). Both meetings provide safe, judgment-free spaces where collectors can connect with others who understand their experiences, share openly, or simply listen and learn. You can attend anonymously if you’d like—use a nickname, turn off your camera, and participate at whatever level feels comfortable. All you have to do is fill out this simple form to get involved.

That’s totally fine. Many of our members are here to explore their habits, not label them. Others are former collectors looking for clarity, closure, or a way to give back. If the hobby’s impact is still lingering—emotionally, financially, or mentally—you’re welcome here. We’re not here to cancel the hobby or tell anyone to stop collecting. We still love collecting. We just want to help people engage with it more thoughtfully, intentionally, and within their financial means.

No. All of our support meetings, content, and community tools & resources are 100% free. We’re funded through sponsorships and partnerships—not the people who need help. Accessibility is core to our mission.

If your spending struggles are connected to compulsive collecting, emotional chasing, or break culture, our resources may be helpful. While we don’t provide financial advice or coaching, our peer-support groups, reflections, and community tools are designed to promote mindfulness, intention, and healthier decision-making. We’re also working toward partnerships with licensed professionals who specialize in behavioral and financial wellness.

Right now, our focus is on adults (18+), but we’re deeply aware of how the hobby impacts younger audiences. With the rise of app-based ripping and influencer marketing, this issue is growing. We’re actively exploring ways to offer education and resources for parents, caregivers, and eventually youth-specific support.

Collectors MD operates as a hybrid organization consisting of both a for-profit entity (Collectors MD LLC) and a nonprofit arm (The CMD Foundation). Collectors MD LLC develops and manages our educational content, media initiatives, partnerships, brand collaborations, and mission-aligned products and services that help sustain and grow our work. The LLC allows us to innovate, create resources, and build financially sustainable programs that support our long-term mission. The CMD Foundation is our charitable nonprofit arm focused exclusively on public benefit. Through tax-deductible donations and grants, the Foundation helps fund free peer support meetings, educational programming, scholarship assistance, awareness campaigns, conference outreach, and the expansion of our referral network and recovery resources for collectors and their families. While the entities have different structures and responsibilities, they share the same mission: to make collecting safer, more intentional, and more supportive for everyone involved.

There are several ways to get involved. You can help spread the word by sharing our content, tagging friends, and raising awareness about the realities of compulsive collecting and gambling-like behaviors in the hobby. If you’re a professional, creator, or brand aligned with our values, we’re always open to collaborating on content, education, research, or advocacy efforts that move the hobby forward. And for those looking to make a direct impact, you can support our work through The CMD Foundation. Contributions to the Foundation help us keep meetings and resources free, expand our educational initiatives, strengthen our referral network, and reach more collectors and families in need of support.
