Collectors MD is proud to formally introduce The CMD Framework, an approach designed to bridge the collectibles industry with prevention, education, peer support, recovery, behavioral health, and treatment.
The framework builds upon the work Collectors MD has been doing since its launch in March 2025, bringing together collectors, families, industry stakeholders, prevention professionals, treatment providers, recovery organizations, and individuals with lived experience to address an emerging gap between two spaces that have historically operated independently from one another.
The collectibles industry understands collecting. The recovery space understands addiction, prevention, treatment, and support. The CMD Framework helps connect the two.
Collecting in its purest form can provide joy, nostalgia, community, identity, connection, and a meaningful way for people to engage with the things they love. At the same time, modern collecting environments have evolved considerably, increasingly incorporating randomized outcomes, variable rewards, scarcity, countdowns, live commerce, auctions, card breaks, pack openings, mystery products, social media-driven hype, and frictionless purchasing environments.
These developments do not mean collecting is inherently gambling. They do, however, reinforce the importance of recognizing the gambling-like mechanics and experiences that have increasingly become embedded within certain modern collecting environments and ensuring that education, prevention, and support evolve alongside them.
The CMD Framework is built around education, responsible engagement, early identification of potentially harmful behaviors, accessible peer support, and clear pathways to professional help when needed.
Rather than treating collecting itself as the problem, the The CMD Framework provides organizations with a way to better understand where risks can emerge and how healthier infrastructure can be incorporated throughout the collecting ecosystem. Depending on the organization and audience, implementation can include educational resources, responsible collecting messaging, peer support programming, professional training, early-intervention tools, recovery resources, and connections to qualified treatment providers.
One of the first real-world examples of this approach can be seen through Unboxed: Exploring a Healthier Relationship with Collecting, developed by the Problem Gambling Coalition of Colorado (PGCC) in partnership with Collectors MD.
Unboxed provides educational resources designed to help individuals explore their relationship with collecting, recognize potentially harmful behaviors, and develop healthier, more intentional approaches to participation. The program also creates an opportunity to connect collecting-specific education with peer support and broader prevention and recovery resources.
Collectors MD is especially grateful to Jamie Glick, LCSW, LAC, LAT, ICGC-I and PGCC for their leadership and willingness to recognize this emerging area of need. Jamie was instrumental in developing the Unboxed curriculum and translating many of the behaviors and experiences being observed within modern collecting into a structured educational resource that can be used by collectors, families, prevention professionals, and behavioral health organizations.
The collaboration demonstrates an important principle behind The CMD Framework: neither the collectibles industry nor the recovery space needs to navigate this intersection alone.
Industry stakeholders understand the culture, language, products, marketplaces, communities, and behaviors surrounding collecting. Prevention, behavioral health, and recovery professionals bring expertise around compulsive behavior, financial harm, early intervention, treatment, recovery, and sustainable behavior change.
The CMD Framework creates an opportunity for those perspectives to work together.
For the collectibles industry, that can mean incorporating responsible engagement through #RipResponsibly and The Healthy Hobby Initiative, consumer education, warning signs, intentional spending practices, and support resources into existing platforms and communities. For prevention and behavioral health organizations, it can mean developing a stronger understanding of modern collecting environments and the language, products, and behaviors individuals may describe when seeking help.
For collectors and families, it means creating a more connected continuum of resources – from education and prevention to peer support, recovery, and professional treatment when necessary.
As collecting continues to expand beyond traditional hobby categories, this work is not limited to trading cards. Sports cards, trading card games, sneakers, memorabilia, comics, coins, watches, toys, luxury goods, digital collectibles, e-gaming, and countless other categories can all exist within rapidly evolving environments shaped by technology, social media, live commerce, scarcity, speculation, and increasingly frictionless access to purchasing.
The CMD Framework is designed to evolve alongside those environments.
Through continued collaboration with organizations across the collectibles industry, prevention, behavioral health, and recovery, Collectors MD aims to help build infrastructure that allows people to enjoy collecting while ensuring education and support are available when someone’s relationship with it begins causing financial, emotional, psychological, or behavioral harm.
