Collectors MD is proud to announce that Founder, Alyx Effron will be presenting at the National Conference on Gambling Addiction & Responsible Gambling 2026 Annual Conference hosted by the National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG) in Nashville, Tennessee.
The session, titled “Not Just a Hobby: How the Culture of Collecting Can Escalate Gambling Disorder”, will take place on July 24, 2026 from 9:45AM-11:00AM as part of the conference’s Foundations & Emerging Insights track.
Alyx will be joined by Jamie Glick and Chigbo Nzoiwu of the Problem Gambling Coalition of Colorado (PGCC) for a conversation focused on the rapidly evolving intersection between collecting culture, gambling-like mechanics, compulsive spending behaviors, and behavioral health.
As modern collecting ecosystems continue evolving through livestream breaking, randomized rewards, high-velocity purchasing environments, social reinforcement, digital marketplaces, and increasingly gamified consumer experiences, more individuals are finding themselves struggling with emotional, financial, and behavioral consequences that often go unrecognized or misunderstood. This session aims to help bridge that gap.
Together, the panel will explore the structural risks and behavioral patterns that can emerge within modern collecting spaces while also discussing practical prevention strategies, harm-reduction frameworks, treatment considerations, and recovery-oriented approaches for individuals impacted by compulsive collecting behaviors.

The session will specifically focus on:
- Analyzing the psychological and behavioral impact of modern collecting platforms that utilize gambling-like mechanics, including randomized rewards, chasing behavior, social reinforcement, and constant accessibility
- Applying practical frameworks to assess risk, understand behavioral drivers, implement personalized treatment strategies, and develop recovery plans surrounding compulsive collecting and related behaviors
- Exploring why many individuals impacted by collecting-related harm often fall outside traditional gambling treatment models despite experiencing similar emotional and behavioral consequences
This opportunity represents an important milestone not only for Collectors MD, but for the broader conversation surrounding gambling-adjacent harm, modern consumer environments, and the need for more awareness, education, prevention, and support infrastructure.
From the very beginning, Collectors MD has believed these conversations belong both inside and outside the hobby.
This is not about attacking the hobby or the art of collecting. It’s not about eliminating passion, nostalgia, or community. It’s about recognizing that certain modern systems and environments can become emotionally, psychologically, and financially overwhelming for some individuals – especially when gambling-like mechanics, high stimulation, financial speculation, and constant reinforcement become deeply embedded into the experience.
The National Conference on Gambling Addiction & Responsible Gambling is the oldest and largest annual national conference in its field and brings together professionals from behavioral health, social work, prevention, treatment, research, recovery advocacy, public policy, and responsible gambling initiatives across the country.
Collectors MD is honored to help contribute to this growing conversation and grateful for the opportunity to share both lived experience and emerging insights surrounding compulsive collecting, recovery, and responsible engagement frameworks.
Collect With Intention. Not Compulsion.
